Lovely Looney Loney

I just can’t get enough of Loney, Dear. Just can’t.

Loney, Dear is actually Emil Svanangen (of Sweden), who writes and records his songs either in his studio apartment or his parents’ basement. David noticed he’ll be in Boston in January opening for Andrew Bird. Two years ago a friend gave me his album Loney, Noir.

Here is the music video for one of the songs on the album, titled “I am John.” I knew I had to watch the video after reading the following comment, left by a YouTube viewer:

“is nobody else bothered that the guy in this video kills an innocent cat? he didn’t even give it a mercy killing, he just hit it with the end of his rifle. and he makes a hat out of it.”

Enjoy.

Here’s what NPR Music had to say about this particular song:

“The song casts a hypnotic spell as it builds to a quietly heartbreaking but strangely euphoric conclusion. Svanangen’s captivating ruminations sound as if he’s trying to capture the purest essence of joy, albeit with a melancholy underbelly. It’s that bittersweet warmth that makes Loney, Dear’s hushed, pastoral folk songs seep into the heart.”

Imagine what they would have to say about the video.

I really like the song “Sinister in a State of Hope,” which is the first on the album. It is actually my favorite I think, but DW isn’t that crazy about it. So it goes.
